ECA Presents Subject Spotlight: A targeted conservation assessment of the climate-sensitive and poorly-known Pilbara Barking Gecko (Underwoodisaurus seorsus)
Mesic-adapted species are disproportionately at risk from climate change because they rely on cool, stable microclimates provided by topographically complex habitats. Conserving these climate-sensitive species requires a comprehensive understanding of their ecology, habitat preferences, and distribution-limiting factors.
When the Pilbara Barking Gecko (Underwoodisaurus seorsus) was described in 2011, increasing temperatures associated with climate change was raised as a potential threat, given the species' occurrence on mid- to high-elevation rocky slopes of the Hamersley Range.
Despite this, U. seorsus has received no research attention and its current Priority 2 conservation listing by DBCA affords it little protection.
To address knowledge gaps on the Pilbara barking gecko (Underwoodisaurus seorsus), I
present the first comprehensive ecological study and conservation assessment of this poorly known species.
