ECA Presents Subject Spotlight: "Rigs To Reefs”: Enhancing Biodiversity Hotspots - Exploring The Ecological And Environmental Benefits
Join us to hear from Dr Sander Scheffers, Hydrobiology as he explores the ecological, environmental, and economic benefits of transforming decommissioned oil and gas platforms and pipelines into artificial reefs. This approach enhances biodiversity by creating habitats that support a wide variety of species, increasing biomass and providing essential services to commercial fisheries. Case studies, such as those from the Gulf of Mexico and Gulf of Exmouth, demonstrate elevated species richness and biomass compared to natural or fully removed sites. Challenges include potential risks from invasive species, pollution, and habitat fragmentation, as well as regulatory hurdles. The initiative also addresses climate change by supporting carbon sequestration and resilience in marine ecosystems. Future research is needed to compare carbon storage with natural reefs and to assess socio-economic impacts for local communities.
