I am an established professional with extensive experience in the areas of urban and river hydraulics, surface water management, flood risk assessment, surface water and groundwater interaction, water quality impacts, and digital technologies. I am inspired by solving the toughest technical challenges in the water environment for social and environmental good.
I have developed strong leadership abilities in part through my previous roles, such as a Head of Department, leading both operationally and strategically the water resources and stormwater teams at DHI New Zealand. I have fostered a reputation as a critical contributor through design thinking and decision-making skills. Putting high performing, collaborative teams together to deliver projects to the highest of standards and on time is what I enjoy doing. Through these qualities, I have confidence in my ability to facilitate positive change and collective effort.
My experience before joining 360 Environmental exposed me to emerging technologies. It enabled me to be a link between potential tech partners and engineering; having a good grasp on what’s out there and what’s needed. I am one of the most experienced and certified MIKE by DHI software trainers in Asia Pacific region and have developed and delivered well over thirty training courses throughout New Zealand and Australia to the scientific and engineering community. I enjoy helping young engineers and scientist develop and grow confidence in modelling, learn how to schematise and analyse the outputs, make decisions and carry out the work as efficiently as possible. I have therefore joined the Kaleidoscope mentoring programme through Engineers Australia, and the AWA mentoring programme. I want to help young professionals develop in the challenging engineering market.
One of my most notable projects is a 6-year programme I was involved with, at first, and manage for the last three years with Tauranga City Council in New Zealand. I was their trusted advisor in the stormwater and urban flooding space. We have collaboratively developed and put to operational use several urban flood models to cover the entire city. We have further investigated potential emergency evacuation routes from the town in the extreme events, such as probable maximum precipitation (PMP), effects of the sea level rise and storm surge to the coastal catchments, and integrated surface water and groundwater management, including investigations on leakage and infiltration between aquifers and wastewater reticulation.
Another large project I was involved with, as a secondee to the client’s offices for a year, is the Hinds catchment integrated water management study. Hinds is a 60 km2 catchment in the Canterbury plains in New Zealand’s south island, bounded by two significant rivers, with the Hinds river flowing through the middle of the catchment. There are two major irrigation schemes in the catchment, with the third one consented. We were optimising the irrigation demands, between the surface and groundwater takes, the effect the introduction of the third scheme will have on the rivers and aquifers and transport of nitrogen to the coast.
I have further acted as a technical advisor and peer reviewer for a large number of modelling projects, including stormwater, river, surface water and groundwater integrated management and flooding for regional and local councils, transportation agencies, dam safety and environmental protection agencies. Also, I was involved with the preparation of environmental court and public hearing evidence documents regarding the technical aspects of several water resources projects.
I am a Professional Member of Engineers Australia (MIEAus), Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng), APEC Engineer and International Professional Engineer (IntPE(Aus)).
