Profile

Michael Curran has a B Sc (Hons) degree in Conservation Biology/Environmental Management and Honours on riparian vegetation from the University of Western Australia. He worked for ten years at Bennelongia as the lead SRE specialist, notably working on examining efficiency and adequacy of SRE surveys and ways to improve assessment of land snails in EIAs. Later, as the Principal Scientist he led numerous major subterranean fauna and SRE projects and was involved in novel work - examining species delimitation methods for subterranean fauna (schizomids), a pilot study to detect troglofauna using eDNA and consolidation of subterranean fauna sampling in WA (WABSI). To advance my professional capacity in June 2020 I took the exciting step of moving to a larger consultancy - Biologic Environmental Survey.

Michael mostly undertakes desktop and field based impact assessments associated with SRE invertebrate species and subterranean fauna but he also has considerable experience in assessment of the flora and fauna of wetlands. He has worked throughout Western Australia and also in the Northern Territory, NSW and New Zealand. Having grown up in the Kimberley, Michael has great capacity and endurance for field work and a genuine interest in working with Traditional Owners.

Michael's technical skills include strong invertebrate identification skills, especially for species in the SRE groups, considerable capacity with GIS applications, computer databases and IT issues, and the extraction and analysis of DNA samples from small invertebrates. Michael has prepared many assessment reports used under Part IV of the WA Environmental Protection Act 1986. He is also familiar with the Commonwealth Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999.
