Garry is the Director of an independent training and research company VisionEnvironment, and has over 30 years’ experience in environmental planning, including environmental impact assessment, coastal planning and open space planning. A long-term IAIA member, Garry has worked in the area of environmental impact assessment (EIA) as a regulator, practitioner and academic for some 30 years. He was the Appeals Convener for the Minister for the Environment for two years and worked as Manager of the Environmental Planning Branch for the Western Australia Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) for nearly 10 years. Garry has taught EIA at Curtin University for over 10 years, and has run specialist training courses in EIA for professionals and practitioners. He has also run three training courses on specific EIA topics for the Office of the EPA, and has organised four two-day national symposiums on impact assessment, the first held in 2012.
Garry was an independent member of the Western Australian Planning Commission from 2010 to 2018, is a long-term member of the Planning Institute of Australia, and is currently on PIA’s National Education Committee. Garry is also chair of Great Victoria Desert Biodiversity Trust, an independent Trust fund dedicated to funding research and on-ground works in the Great Victoria Desert, and chair of Urbaqua, a not-for-profit enterprise that works to partner with and support agencies in WA to co-deliver a water and environmentally sensitive future.
